Then I shall know that You will save Israel by my hand, as You have said. Judges 6 : 37
Good morning. Let us resume the Character study of Gideon.
Gideon considered himself as the least among the least, but God made it clear that He would deliver Israelites from the hands of Midianites through Gideon. But he was not so confident. Gideon said to God, “If You will save Israel by my hand as You have said; look, I shall put a fleece of wool on the threshing floor; if there is dew on the fleece only, and it is dry on all the ground, then I shall know that You will save Israel by my hand, as You have said.” And it was so. When he rose early the next morning and squeezed the fleece together, he wrung the dew out of the fleece, a bowlful of water. Then Gideon said to God, “Do not be angry with me, but let me speak just once more: Let me test, I pray, just once more with the fleece; let it now be dry only on the fleece, but on all the ground let there be dew.” And God did so that night. It was dry on the fleece only, but there was dew on all the ground.
Though the Lord spoke to him, Gideon was not willing to believe it, he again and again wanted the Lord to confirm by signs. Today how many of us are longing for signs. Lord if this happens, then I believe you spoke to me. Lord if this problem comes to me at my work place, then I believe that you ask me to look for another offer outside, if…if..if…. When we have the close relationship with Him, there is no need for any signs other than the Word which comes from His mouth. Though His voice is so silent, we can listen to it. If we place so many Ifs before the Lord, it is nothing but we doubt Him. And when we add ‘True’ part to these Ifs, we command Him as if He is our servant. How can a creation command its Creator? Jesus strongly rebuked those who looked for signs about His divinity and He gave them no sign other than the Prophet Jonah’s reference! What signs do we need more? He holds our future. He knows our history, present and also the future. We’re safe in His hands. Did He promise you? If He says, He will do for sure. God is never a liar.
